Best Gluten-Free Things I Ate at Borough Market in London
A Personal Gluten-Free Food Adventure in London
I’ve been lucky enough to visit London a few times over the last few years…and it has truly become one of my favorite places in the world. I love everything about it. As my daughter described it, “It’s like New York, but nicer.” And you know, while I love seeing all of the sights, from Tower of London to Westminster Abbey and Covent Garden to Selfridge’s, I’m really there for the food.
Since I was diagnosed with celiac disease a few years ago, travel and food have become at once a source of anxiety and an opportunity for adventure. It’s a mix of frustration, excitement, joy and unease.
The good news? I’ve found that visiting Europe has been outstanding for gluten-free and celiac travelers. In particular, London has been an absolute dream to visit and to eat so many special, unique, and proudly gluten-free foods.
One of my favorite spots for the vibe and the food?
Borough Market.
What is Borough Market?
In short, Borough Market is a food lover’s dream. One of London’s oldest and most famous food markets, its history dates back over 1,000 years. Located in the Southwark area near London Bridge, it has grown into a vibrant hub for food lovers, offering a wide range of artisanal, specialty, and international foods. The market is a bustling mix of fresh produce stalls, street food vendors, and artisanal shops, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists.
How to Get to Borough Market
Borough Market is conveniently located right next to London Bridge Station, which is served by the Jubilee and Northern Underground lines as well as National Rail services. From the station, it’s just a short walk to the market’s entrance on Southwark Street. The market is also accessible by several bus routes and has bike racks nearby for cyclists. If you’re driving, there are cab pick-up and drop-off points close to the market, but parking is limited.
We visited after our tour at the Tower of London, just walked across the Tower Bridge and over to Borough Market. The walk from the Tower of London to Borough Market is a little under a mile, so plan for a 15-20 minute walk, and yes…we did make our children do this after a 3 hour guided Tower of London tour. No time to waste on our trips!

Ok, let’s talk about the food, specifically the GLUTEN FREE FOOD! Borough Market is a paradise for gluten-free eaters, packed with delicious options that cater to all tastes. Here are some of the standout gluten-free treats I enjoyed. And tbh, I would have had more if I had the time.
Free From Bakehouse
I almost cried tears of joy when I came upon Free From Bakehouse. This 100% gluten-free bakery is a must-visit. Their pistachio cakes, brownies, and seasonal bakes are not only safe for celiacs but absolutely delicious. I picked up a range of goodies to bring back to the hotel and enjoy over a few days time. My favorite was the Victoria sponge, which fulfilled my Great British Baking Show dreams.
La Pepia Arepas
If there’s one thing about me, it’s that I love anything made with cornmeal. These gluten-free Venezuelan cornmeal pockets from La Pepia are filled with savory ingredients, making for a hearty and satisfying snack.
Turnips
The viral sensation at Borough Market known for its fresh strawberries dipped in rich, smooth chocolate LIVED UP TO THE HYPE! My daughter and I were set on trying these and they did not disappoint. The strawberries were sweet and juicy, and the melted chocolate was rich and creamy. Just an absolutely delicious treat that I highly recommend.
Triple Cooked Chips
Are there any better words for a person with celiac than ‘dedicated fryer’?
Located at Borough Market, this dedicated gluten-free spot serves some of the crispiest, golden fries you can find, made using a special method that involves frying the potatoes twice, resulting in chips that are perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The chips come with a variety of homemade dipping sauces including garlic aioli, tangy ketchup, and a rich smoky barbecue sauce. Anytime I get to eat chips (or fries) is a special occasion and this one delivered.
